World Tourism Day – “Tourism and Rural Development”

"Tourism and Rural Development"

This year World Tourism Day, celebrated on 27 September, is focused on tourism and rural development. As a sustainable tourism initiative, rural development and upliftment sits at the heart of our partnership with the Mdluli Community.

The lodge’s development is anchored in the belief that we have a responsibility to uplift and up-skill the members of the community, as well as to upgrade basic infrastructure, sanitation and schools. There are a number of projects and initiatives in place, over and above the lodge’s operations, which positively impact the Community. Ultimately, we are committed to a lasting and productive partnership with the Mdluli Community whose energy is infused into the lodge’s experience.

Over the past few months we have been working on a beadwork project involving 14 women from the Community. The intricate beadwork installation has been hand beaded by women from the Mdluli Community. and was divided between the four villages; namely Makoko, Salubindza, Bhekiswayo and Nyongane.

The project has been a cross-generational collaboration – with the older women transferring their beading craft to the younger women, fostering a lasting legacy. The beadwork designs form part of a 15 meter artwork in the lodge’s restaurant, and the designs have been inspired by traditional Swazi beadwork motifs. These motifs have encoded symbolic messages.

We acknowledge and appreciate these ladies for their contribution to this project, under the facilitation of Ms. Nelly Mdhluli Chairperson of the Mdluli Traditional Council.
